Nobel Prize – A Sad Joke

I remember when the Nobel Prize meant something.  I can't recall the names of all the winners in all the categories, but when I heard the name Nobel mentioned, I paid attention.

That all stopped for me in 2007, when the Nobel Prize committee awarded Al Gore this prestigious award for the farce of man-made global warming.  And I recently learned something that added even more to my disdain for the Nobel Prize.

I was introduced to the story of a real hero who died in May of this year at the age of 98.  Her name was Irena Sendler.  It is not often that I hold a person in the same esteem as the matriarchs of my family, my grandmother who raised me, and who turned 88 years young this year, and my great aunt Mary, who is undoubtedly the smartest woman I have ever met.  But Irena Sendler is one such person.

Here is an excerpt from her story that was published on Snopes.com:

Irena's story begins during WWII, where she got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.  A strange occupation to request, however Irena had an ulterior motive.

Because Irena was German, she became aware of the Nazi's plans for the Jews. She decided that she would save as many of the Jews as she could, and thus Irena smuggled infants out of the German concentration camps in the bottom of her tool box. The larger kids she carried in burlap sacks.

Irena managed to smuggle out and save 2500 infants and children, most of whom went to convents and orphanages.

Irena was finally caught. And she was beaten severely, having her legs and arms broken. But she never gave up any information on others associated with helping her.

She would have been put to death, but after awaking from one of her many beatings, she was informed by one of her German captors that he was freeing her. Her co-conspirators had paid a bribe to the German soldier, who listed her as deceased.

She was released and would go on to save an additional 500 Jewish people, including her future husband.

It is said that Irena Sender was a candidate for the Nobel Prize in 2007. This list is sealed for 50 years, so we can't know for sure, though consensus is that she was indeed a candidate. Nevertheless the winner of the Nobel Prize that year was Al Gore, who presented a slide show on Global Warming.

The man who has done nothing is revered over the woman who gave everything. This is what I call Liberal Hypocrisy.

That's my rant!

amazing...and sadly, I'm not surprised. Must have been some slide-show! Or as Will Smith playing the character of Chris Gardner said "He must have had on some really nice pants".

Thanks Kevin, really good post, makes you want to beat the crap out of someone on that committee.

Kevin, extremely well written... You now have a new fan!

Kevin- the comments you wanted me to post here look more like they were meant for the Biden by the door article. Are you sure they go with this post?

Not sure. IM me, and we can resolve it.

Wow, Kevin that truly is an excellent example of liberal hypocrisy. I have heard the story of Irena Sendler but had no idea she was a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize along with Al Gore. What were those committee members smoking?

The Nobel Prize has become as trivial as an MTV award.

Wow. Disgusting is all I have to say. It makes me nauseous thinking about the sacrifices this man has made in his life compared to a person such as Irena Sender. Even if it turns out that it is not her, there are probably many more deserving people.
I've been without internet, so without The Black Sphere, I feel like something is missing in my day! Thanks, Kevin!

When I see some of the Nobel Prize winners lately, I cannot help but conclude that the one-time prestigious award has been cheapened.

The Curie family (Marie, her husband, daughter and son-in-law) would be horrified that their accomplishments resulted in the same award as some of the recent winners. I realize that the categories may be different but most people do not know whether the prize was awarded for physics, chemistry, etc.

It's a lot like the Olympics has been for about 30 years, which is why we kick butt at all the sports that don't rely on judges.

If you're from America, you're screwed.

With the Nobel Prize, it's the same, unless you're an America-hating American who espouses policies that weaken us.

Great blog, man. I'm adding you to my blogroll at http://poorrepublican.today.com/.

Great article! A great and honorable prize has warped into a pathetic liberal popularity contest.

They should rename it the Nobel "I invented dynamite and feel guilty" Prize. Only flaming Libs need apply.

TheBlackSphere,
Next you are going to suggest they gave the Nobel Peace Prize to a man who gave away the Panama Canal while president, created an Act called the CRA that led to the destruction of our financial world by implementing Liberalism’s fatal flaw ... wealth redistribution; and struck fear into the world of Islam so much so that they released 52 American hostages held for 444 days despite appeasement out of intense fear of personal retribution from a peanut farmer dressed as Rambo.

Love your stuff

Al Gore was VERY well paid (and is STILL being paid) for everything that he did.
Irena Sendler was paid nothing.

I would have voted for Irena Sendler.

Terrific story. What a wonderful woman. Proof that God does send his angels to help us.

I never could figure out how being a proponent for global warming related to "peace". Still can't.

Come on, dude. The Nobel committee revealed itself as mentally and morally bankrupt when they awarded the Peace Prize to Yasser Arafat. Anybody who doesn't know the Nobel is a crock after that isn't bothering to pay attention.

I'd vote for this story twice if I could.

New fan here as well.

Let me get this straight, they'll give Yassar Arafat, a lying, theiving, murdering terrorist a Noble Peace prize, but not Irena Sendler? Well, should I come up with an Engineering marval that comes up for a Nobel Prize, I know what finger to give the nominating committee.

That was a great post. The Nobel Peace Prize category in particular has a lot of questionable recipients and this has always been true. The prize should not be given out as often as it is.

Kevin, I've read several of your posts. You always have a good point to make, but this is by far my favorite. What a great reminder that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things. Thanks so much.

Digital, yes, I would like to pimp slap the Novel committee members! Let's do it here.

ConservativeBlackWoman, they're smoking "wacky weed" for sure!

The Black Sphere said...

Erica, thanks for following me, and yes, this is a story that needs to be told.

The Black Sphere said...

Laura, yes the Nobel Prize means little, now that we can see how political is has become.

CSC you have a GREAT site, and I recommend people check you out! I left you a message on your last blog.

The Nobel Peace Prize has become a political tool. Nowadays it is only awarded to people that serve US interests in some way. Nowt to do with peace, and sometimes even given to people linked with terrorism activities, as long as they were targeting enemies of the West.
