The Specter Condition

Arlen Specter left the Republican Party for self-preservation. How pathetic! Almost eighty years old and Specter is still trying to figure out how to hang on to that "gubment" job. Here I thought only poor people worked into their eighties. What we have here is a new phenomena called "The Specter Condition."

In the real world, eighty-year old men don't "change sides." My octogenarian great-grandfather believed when he turned off the radio, he shut it off for everybody. Nobody could convince him otherwise, and we certainly tried. I admired his resolve. Right or wrong he stuck to his guns. Now he only had a 3rd-grade education, and spent his entire life picking cotton and living in squalor, sSo he had an excuse.

Specter however is an eighty-year-old educated senator. He is supposed to have lived his life in such a way that he knows who he is. Most real men gain a set of core beliefs by the time they are forty—max! Apparent with a spineless RINO like Specter, it takes twice as long—Yet another indication that Specter was a liberal Democrat.

Now I'm sure the life of a senator is pretty sexy in comparison to most jobs. I'd take it, that is if I didn't have to get the anal probe of my life in order to run for office. And there is that small thing of needing about $4M to wage a good fight.

Regardless, if I actually made it, I would be all over the Washington social circuit. I'd do it the Fred Thompson way, which is to run with the big dogs, hang with the star-boinkers (ladies only—I'm no Barney Frank), until I was ragged. And I would amass my fortune, just like the rest of those crooks in Washington.

But…BUT…by the time I was eighty, I think I would be ready to abandon my life of debauchery and my life in politics—dare I be repetitive—maybe do some traveling or something. Life would be one continual vacation for me, outside of the occasional speaking engagement, which would pay for me and my significant other to visit either tropical or luxurious locales.

Yet here is Specter, a cancer survivor for God's sake, wanting to apparently die in a senate seat. That senate seat must be injecting his flat, flabby butt with heroin, because I would "suck paper" leaving that job…at say sixty! Mission accomplished!

Then again, why leave when you have a cushy job of doing essentially nothing. Your "boss", the America public is generally forgiving. And the job is easy. You really don't need to be able to read, as in legislative bills, which we found out during Obamulus von Porkulus.

Nevertheless, by eighty, enough is enough. So why would a weather-worn, cancer –surviving, flip-flopping supposedly learned man want to stay? Maybe Specter has decided to try to "pickle himself" for a few more years—to make amends? "I'm a Republican, no I'm a Independent, no I'm a racist, stupid Democrat"—I'd say the voters of Pennsylvania have NOT gotten their money's worth. I'd consider the "I want to make amends" excuse more seriously had Specter not joined the ranks of the racist, elitist Democrats.

Ironically, Specter was the same senator who said that senator's should not be able to switch parties in mid-term. With ethics like this, why bother just switching parties, and just go for an Obama cabinet spot? You can tell that Specter is a liberal Democrat, as he undoubtedly aimed low in this recent decision.

Here's the wrap:

I can see Specter's change in the real world, where people change careers, in order to survive a layoff and so on. But I don't see how this could happen to Specter.

I suspect that Specter has used up all his "cat lives" anyway, so I don't think we will have to worry about him politically much longer. But I think he is sending a bad message to people of all walks of life, in that he is saying "desperation is an alternative."

I say Specter is desperate, and speculate that he is out of money; money he likely lost in the financial meltdown—the meltdown created by his newfound racist Democrat Party. I further speculate that Specter has a "tax problem." If so, then that would be a legitimate reason to join the party of tax cheats—or at least the party he can get away with cheating on his taxes.

What we are witnessing is a senator who is finally in touch with the rest of America. And it took the election of a no talent hack to bring "The Specter Condition" to the public's attention. That is, with Obama in office, even formerly rich white folks will have to work into their 80s.

That's my rant!

I was with you until you said the democrats created the meltdown. I'm sure if you ask most of wallstreet how they voted, the answer would be republican.

BTW, calling democrats racist should really be off the table - neutralized. It kinda reminds me of when my 80-year old grandmom would say "A pot can't call the kettle black." But maybe your pot is anodized. But I tend to think of the atypical republican pot as cast iron! and that's my rant!

Let him join the ranks of Dirty Harry Reid, Former KKK member Robert Byrd and Ed Kennedy. He will be right there with all the other demented liberal fools. While he is at it he needs to take John (or as you said "Juan") McCain with him.

I will say that not all Dems are racist but they sure are hell bent on keeping blacks suppressed and in their proper place. Take a look at the American ghettos. Almost all of them (if not all) are run by Democrats, and black Democrats at that. I now this first hand. I grew up in poverty and blamed the white man for my ills until I realized it was a black man that has been my Representative for nearly 20 years now. Just take at the places in America you would not want to live. They are run by Dems. There is a whole lot of other things I can say about dems. such as how they use black leaders and black churches to keep us voting for the very same people that won't lift a finger to help us. How they think that we need government help to make it. So much to say about this party.

Specter isn't broke. He just has the same massive ego that all politicians have, and his life has no meaning without his "title".
Like Obama, he doesn't give a shit about his constituents. He only cares about his own survival.

He left the Republicans because he had competition from a Repub who was beating him by 20+ points. No other reason.
It's all about ego, folks.
Personally, I wish we could throw ALL of the bums out and start over. And write a law that excludes lawyers from holding ANY office.

We need age and terms limits for politicians. If I was him, I would have retired at 65 and went on an extended sailing trip. I think that the problem is an addiction to power and influence.

You are forgetting Spector got excellent health ins on my taxes while fighting cancer and he wants to give the people who gave him that health insurance defunct Cuban crap. People of PA will probably watch American Idol and vote him in. In the 1970s Spector gave money to Ira Einhorn to leave America and be on the run after he killed his gf and put her body in the trunk. Einhorn never worked a day but to spout stupidity like Bill Ayers. Spector decided to help a felon and if it was not for America's Most Wanted being persistent he would still be free and now an old man in jail but his gf is dead and her family suffered much digress from Spector. He is an old useless man who should disappear.

Paz:
Wow. I didn't know that Specter helped that evil murderer Einhorn.
But wasn't Einhorn such a good guy to bring us "Earth Day"?(I'm being sarcastic, Paz).

Specter: Just go home and die. We've had enough of you, you creep.

I am glad to see Spectre (the Bond villains, which is how I'll spell Specter's name from now on) finally admitting what sensible people have known for years--

He's a flaming liberal who got elected as a republican because back then, Republican Party guys were the Rockefellers, the Fords, the country club, blue blooded politically moderate (read liberal) smart guys who turn their elegant noses in the air at the thought of bitter, gun-loading, bible-clinging lower middle class flagwavers..

LIKE ME...

Specter is one of the last holdouts from those days.. McCain is another.. Snowe and Collins perhaps, but I haven't looked into their history...

Remember McCain's advisor Tim whatsisname telling us we have to control the Christians or else we'll never win anything...

I would caution Tim with this move by Spectre. Arlen now is convinced that the bitter clingers are all that is left of the Republican party, hence his snooty desire to leave us.. which is shared by us, who've wanted him to leave for years... Tim seems to think McCain lost because of the bitter clingers.

I propose that it is the bitter clingers who didn't VOTE for McCain, and won't be voting Spectre in that upcoming Repub primary either... and they just dislike us and don't want to be associated with us..

To Tim I say... "nice job in the last election, McCain campaign advisor.. is that performance the reason we should listen to you?"

Truth is, Republican base voters just won't turn out for liberal repubs, period. No inspiration. Glad to see Spectre recognizing this and bolting for greener turf, where liberals like him can be appreciated.

If we could just flush that deadwood and have a committed conservative Republican party, we will do BETTER. Tim's wrong, Spectre's right.. Republicans will be BETTER OFF to embrace conservatism and rid themselves of the nonconservative junk.

Can you say "Benedict Arlen?" Or how about T.A.R.P.? Now I know he voted for what we know as T.A.R.P. to being an acronym for "Troubled Assets Relief Program," but I would prefer that to be now known as "Tarnished And Repudiated Politician." But hey, let's not forget, Benedict Arlen was a DEMONcrat who in 1965 ran for the office of District Attorney on a Republican ticket and won. At the recommendation of Representative Gerald R. Ford, he served on the Warren commission in which he authored or coauthored the "single bullet theory" in regards to the President Kennedy assassination. Now in theory, or shall I say reality, he has now joined the Multiple Buthead Caucas. No single anything theory here people. This is a large and apparently growing faction we have in America.

Ethics? Apokalyps, did you say "ethics"? If Specter has any ethics I've not seen them. He has been a drag on our party for too many years. I am thrilled that he is now the Democrat Party problem and not any other Party. On top of everything else, his slllllllow way of taaaalking puts people to sleep. Specter is a mealy mouthed leftist with no integrity that I have been able to establish in all the years I've followed politics.

And these comments demonstrate A - why he left the Republican Party and B - why the Republican Party is in shambles. You whackos are making the definition of a Republican so narrow that pretty soon all you'll have left is a pity party. Good luck tiny tent! The base may help you win elections, but they aren't going to do it alone.

He left the party because he knew that in the Republican primary, he could not win against a more conservative opponent, based on the trending of the voters. He believes he can make the jump from Republican-lite to Democrat-lite, and remain electable in 2010. He can't.

Good riddance, RINO. This is why our country needs term limits - regardless of "party affiliation" since corruption is bi-partisan.With any luck , Olympia Snow will follow his example. The Dems will have to take all the credit and all the blame now , too.

Your lack of knowledge is showing. Specter was losing to his Republican challenger by 20 points. He knew he was going to lose, THAT'S why he switched parties.
Specter cares about one thing and one thing only: HIMSELF.
He's a perfect fit with the narcissistic Obama administration. Your party can have the loser. Good riddance.
And as for the "tiny tent" comment:
When the Obama administration destroys the country's economy in the next four years, that "tent" is going to grow to the size of the Mall of America.

I have no problem with "breaking for cover", but you need to ensure the cover will conceal. Specter broke in the wrong direction. He left himself wide open to some bad bad juju. In the end...I'll bet he does more damage to the racist Democrat Party than Hollywood can. Same mold.

Good for them...good for him...and good riddance.

He is now in a pasture of pork shit...

I often wondered how a republican could get a senate seat in such a demoncratic state like PA. Now I know because all Spector did was to confirm what anyone with a functioning brain already knew: he's a died hard, racist, socialist leftist liberal (stateist). This man has always voted the party line. The democrat party line. Why the republicans of the state kept electing him in the primaries is still beyond me, but now that they've wised up and was going to cream him because the survival of the party is at stake, he finally does the "honest" thing and joins the party that he really was a member of for 30 years.

Did anyone hear is reasoning. Nearly made me choke to death. He had to leave because he felt that the Republicans have gone too far to the right. I like to know what he's smoking because I sure could use some. For the last 12 years the Republicans have gone too far to the left. Spector had gone so much further to the left that it, as we say in physics, relative to his position appeared to be going to far to the right. The reason Bush and the Republican congress was such a disaster and why the Republicans got beaten so badly was because they spent and left the culture wars as they were on the left instead of sticking to their conservative values and disinfrachised everyone. So Spector, you've shown how much you're out of touch with reality, so joining BO and his delusional gang is a perfect fit for you. It could be the only real "honest" thing he's done in 30 years.

I'm not saying that Dems are not racist. It's just that republicans are too. So in conclusion racism has no party, it is about the individual not a collective party.

The only reason to hang on to the RINOs is when you're a bare, bare majority and a RINO's move will cost you the majority. Hardly the case here.

This is a PR victory for The O & the Dems, that's all. They could always count on Arlen's vote in a crunch (unless there was something in it for Arlen if he voted with the Republicans), so this, in reality, makes no difference in their "filibuster-proof" majority.

Someone said that with Specter's move, both parties' IQs have simultaneously been raised. I can't disagree with that!

Kevin, I came here from a Townhall.com comments section. The commenter said, "This guy gets it," and I was curious. Now I'm in awe. And you're in my Bookmarks. I don't expect to comment often [I'm not worthy!], but I hope to come here often.

Congress - in particular, Barney Frank and others - voted down regulation of Fannie and Freddie. Pres. Bush and John McCain both warned of a future disaster, but no one listened. Frank got up and said "Fannie and Fweddie have no pwobwems" (or something like that), and basically thumbed their noses at Bush and McCain.
